Zel
----

Name:
Зелимхан Айдамиров [Zelimkhan Aydamirov]

Representative of:
The Chechen Republic / Чече́нская Респу́блика [Chechenskaya Respublika] / Нохчийн Республика [Noxçiyn Respublika]

Nicknames:
Зел [Zel], Чечня́ [Chechnya/Chechnia/Chechenia], Нохчийчоь [Noxçiyçö]

Name source:
"Chechnya/Chechenya/Chechen" --- The term "Chechen" is ultimately believed to derive from the Iranian name for the Noxçi and it first occurs in Arabic sources from the 8th century. According to popular tradition, the Russian term "Chechen" comes from the name of the village of Chechen-Aul, where the Chechens defeated Russian soldiers in 1732. The word "Chechen", however, occurs in Russian sources as early as 1692 and the Russians probably derived it from the Kabardian "Shashan".
"Zelimkhan " --- From Zelimkhan Abdumuslimovich Yandarbiyev, a Chechen writer and a politician, who served as acting president of the breakaway Chechen Republic of Ichkeria between 1996 and 1997. He became a leader in the Chechen nationalist movement as the Soviet Union began to collapse. In May 1990, he founded and led the Vainakh Democratic Party (VDP), the first Chechen political party, which was committed to an independent Chechnya. The VDP initially represented both Chechen and Ingush until their split after Chechnya's declaration of independence from the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.
"Aydamirov" --- From Abuzar Abdulhakimovich Aydamirov, a Chechen novelist and poet, author of a historical trilogy dedicated to Caucasian Wars and of the Anthem of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.

Age in appearance:
Young adult.

Age in reality:
Towns were discovered in the area that is now Chechnya as early as 8000 BCE. Horseback riding came around 3000 BCE [probably having diffused from contact with Indo-European speaking-tribes to the North]. According to ethnic Circassian Caucasus specialist Amjad Jaimoukha, it was either the Koban or Kharachoi culture that was considered the first culture made by the cultural and linguistic ancestors of the Chechens (meaning the Chechens first arrived in their homeland 3000–4000 years ago when the two cultures existed). The Chechens are accustomed to democratic ways, their social structure being firmly based on pluralism and deference to individuality. Log before the Russian conquest, they had formed an independent nation with its own language and definite territory, and peculiar, albeit stable, social and political structures based on autonomous clans with mutual support relations that linked them into larger tribal confederations (which generally coincided with dialects). Each clan was headed by a respected elder and decisions were taken by elected councils or plebiscites.

Date Established:
January 10/ January 11, 1991 [As a republic within the Russian Federation]

Astrological Sign
Capricorn

National Anthem:
Song of Shtalak/ Shtalak's Song [Шатлакхан Илли]

Official Languages:
Chechen, Russian.

National Animal:
Wolf [Borz/Борз], because Chechnya saw the wolf as the only beast that dares to attack a stronger animal. Its lack of strength is compensated for by its extreme daring, courage and adroitness. If the wolf loses the struggle, he dies silently, without expression of fear or pain. And he dies proudly, facing his enemy.

Weapon of Choice:
Daggers, either polished or burnished, both could measure up to 60 centimeters long and up to 9 centimeters wide.
Shashka, a feather-light, vine-flexible and razor-sharp ornamented sword. His most prized shashkas are 'gurda', 'kaldam' and 'ters-maimal' ('little wolf').
Bulat, a knife made of damask steel that can easily cut the anvil horn.
His most recent weapon of choice would be the Borz submachine gun. Not the awesomest machine gun you can find, but ssshhh

Socioeconomic Level:
His socio-economic level as a child varied between middle-low to low; he did survive the repeated invasions from about everywhere, even managed to resist the Mongolian invasion twice [the only Russian territory who managed to do so, along with Ingushetia], but it obviously cost him a lot every time. As an effect of the wars and rebellions against Russia [some minor ones are still happening right now], his socio-economic level was never above middle-low, even as an adult. Approximately 80% of his economic potential was destroyed that time. But recently, the economic situation in his land had improved back to middle-low level, since the wars ended until now. Regarding his social level and the application of Human Rights, he was once included in the "Worst of the Worst" list of most repressive societies in the world. Today, things had been going slightly better, but the government still pushed for enforced Islamic dress code and other traditions which, at times, violently repressed people.

Religion/ Spirituality:
He was used to be a Pagan before, but had converted voluntarily to Islam. So he is now a Sunni Muslim, following the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence just like 94% of his people.

Siblings:
His closest familial relationship would be with his twin brother, :iconaph-ingushetia: Ибрагим Айдамиров/Ибра [Ibragim Aydamirov/ Ibra], or the Republic of Ingushetia [Респу́блика Ингуше́тия] [APH-Ingushetia]; whose language has pervasive passive bilingualism with him.

----------------------
Physical Characteristics:
----------------------

Height:
179cm

Weight:
72kg

Race:
Caucasian.

Eye:
Very pale shade of indigo blue in color with very poor sight as an adult [The poor sight and the paleness was supposedly caused by the massive bombing on Grozny, Chechnya's capital during the wars, that damaged his eyes considerably; and also meant to show Chechnya's very limited view of the world, especially Russia].
As a kid, though, he had a pair of deep indigo eyes with perfect sight.

Hair Color:
Wavy, neck-length, dark golden blonde in color; the hair strands are baby fine, soft and rather messy.

Skin:
White, slightly tanned, rough.

Distinguishing features:
Two moles on his right cheek [meant to show the two times he managed to resist Mongolian Invasion], a scar from under his right eye to his cheekbone [representing the First Chechen War], another scar from above the left side of his lips to his chin [representing the Second Chechen War]...the two wars that changed the shape of his land noticeably.

Dressing style:
For everyday wear, he usually wore a slightly faded green tshirt with white-orange-white-green stripes around the waist [the colors of his flag], green military pants, and a pair brown boots.
He could also be seen wearing white Muslim long shirt that reaches his knee, white trousers, white cap and simple black shoes on Friday and/or religious holidays.
On his national holidays and other special days, he would be wearing his traditional outfit of cherkeska caftan, silver-plated belt, bashlyk hood, papakha fur hat, dark-colored Caucasian boots, and sometimes also wearing burka sheepskin cover.

Habits: (smoking, drinking etc.)
Sometimes he smokes when he has some spare money to buy a pack of cigarettes. But drinking, gambling, and visiting a whorehouse would be no-no to him.

Disabilities:
Since his eyes had been damaged during the wars, his current eyesight is about half a meter at max. Above that, it would look considerably blurrier to him; and this makes it hard for him to determine someone's appearance and expression from afar, which in return makes him a little more suspicious and cautious towards random visitors. His weak sight also considerably affects his combat ability, obviously.

---------
Attitude
---------

Mannerisms:
Zel is quite a hardcore xenophobe that clings hard onto his culture, so he's highly suspicious of foreigners and new people. Because of the wars and the repeated invasions, his initial approach to most people would be unwelcoming, unfriendly, and/or nonchalant. Especially the ones from Russia and/ or related to Russia, for historical reasons. Family is a special case, though. If one would ask him what "friends" mean to him, he'd reply with a statement that he doesn't believe in such a thing. Not that he meant he'd rather be a loner. When he met someone, he'd see them as either a family, acquaintance, or enemy. And he could be an ass towards people, so he would be expecting people to treat him that way as well. Niceness --especially after he's being annoying to someone-- would blatantly surprise him.

In his culture, family is more important than one's own life. There's a tradition in his culture that he named as "Blood Oath"...meaning he will swear on his blood that he will protect his family, defend them, and revenge them for anything bad the others do to them.

Self-image:
Zel saw himself as a proud mountain knight of the Caucasus; thinks highly of honor, dignity, bravery, persistence, and endurance. He tried not to yield to the psychology of obedience; tried not to oblige or please the superiors. He has great pride when it comes to his culture and his way of life, and wouldn't let foreign power dictate what he should or should not do.

-----------------------
Emotional Characteristics
-----------------------

Zel was more of an extrovert than an introvert; had never been afraid to tell people exactly what he was thinking about them, at times with a surprisingly blunt words of choice. He usually had a hard time dealing with anger, tend to be hot tempered and vindictive at most conflicts that pissed him off.

When it comes to nations/states/cities/areas he doesn't know, or doesn't know much, he could be pretty much judgmental and prejudicial. Especially if the said nation/state/city/area had some kind of an above-enjoyable relationship with Russia. He expected most people to hate him anyway, or thinking that he was some kind of a terrorist that will kill them when they weren't looking. So most of the time, especially to people who appeared obnoxious or prejudicial, he didn't feel the need to even bother to be nice.

He can be noticeably stingy when it comes to himself, but on the other hand, he can be generous towards his family and the very few allies he had. He treasured his allies so highly, placed huge trust upon them, and he might usually see these close allies as brothers or sisters in arms, rather than friends.

--------------------------------
Additional Notes on This Character:
--------------------------------

** Chechen language doesn't have curse words. This doesn't mean that Chechen people don't curse. They do, but they use Russian or any other languages to do so. So, yeah, they curse, sometimes a lot...but always in other languages and never in Chechen. To the Chechens, their language may only be used to speak of good things.

*** Fresh from Wikipedia~
"The Chechens are often referred to as the 'French of the Caucasus', for a number of reasons. Compared to their natives, Chechens have, like the French, historically been a comparably liberal people, though this is often obscured in the modern day. Like the French, who overthrew their age-old monarchy in the French revolution, the Chechens had a similar revolution a century or two earlier, and they bore the distinction (for a period) of being the only egalitarian society in an area full of monarchic states. As the French did, the Chechens preferred swift, revolutionary (and often violent) methods to realize the change they wished to see- unlike the Circassians (called the "English of the Caucasus" both for their political and personality characteristics) who preferred more gradualist methods. In the more personality/national character sense (generally the more common use), like the French, they have a reputation for being witty and clever."

*** In the works of V. Potto, ‘Caucasus Wars’.
"They (Russians) found the persistent, stubborn enemy, whose physical strength, and democratic customs, and their whole way of life breathed by war and will. That is...the Chechens."

[[I don't know why my hometown was trolled by nature so much the past few weeks. Not going to mention where I live (apart from a few who knew already) just because. Here are the things that happens here in no certain order: 1. Temperature reaching 85+ a few days in a week....I really should migrate to a colder place in July. 2. Rain. Which comes for an hour or two, then suddenly stops for a couple of hours, then voila! It's raining again! Comes in pair with-- 3. Wind (when not paired with rain, it makes me happy actually). 4. More rain when you didn't expect it. 5. Humidity reaching 90%... 6. Even more rain though the water reservoir
